Op tweeëntwintigjarige leeftijd nam McCann ontslag bij Irish Times waar hij als verslaggever werkte en vertrok uit Ierland naar de Verenigde Staten. Hij had verschillende banen, zo werkte hij in Massachusetts als taxichauffeur, in Detroit als portier in een hotel. Hij wilde op de fiets de lange tocht van Miami naar New Orleans ondernemen. Om in zijn levensonderhoud te voorzien werkte hij nu eens als schilder en dan weer als pompbediende. Twee jaar lang fietste hij van Texas naar Mexico en van Canada naar Californië. Vervolgens verbleef McCann ongeveer twee jaar in Texas. Daar werkte hij als begeleider van jongeren die net uit de gevangenis ontslagen waren. Met zijn vrouw vertrok McCann via een langdurige tussenstop in Ierland voor anderhalf jaar naar Japan. In Tokio gaf hij Engelse les, terwijl zijn vrouw aan de universiteit Japans studeerde. Na die anderhalf jaar vestigde het echtpaar zich in New York. Rond die tijd schreef McCann zijn langverwachte debuut: de verhalenbundel Vissen in de nachtzwarte rivier. Zijn Het verre licht verscheen onder meer in Amerika, Engeland, Frankrijk, Duitsland, Italië, Brazilië, Portugal, Denemarken, Griekenland en Japan. McCann doet veel onderzoek voor zijn werk. Zo verbleef hij voor Het verre licht bijna een jaar bij de daklozen in de tunnels onder New York. Voor Danser reisde hij af naar Rusland.
